Donald R. Dizney

Donald R. Dizney is the Chairman of the Board of United Medical Corporation.  Founded in 1974, United Medical Corporation, through a number of affiliated operating entities, has established and expanded networks of owned and operated specialty hospitals.

United Medical currently owns and operates San Jorge Children's Hospital, one of the largest free standing children's hospitals in the country.  The company has developed numerous chains of specialty hospitals and has been a partner in joint venture affiliations with some of the nation's largest proprietary public companies and non-profit networks.

Mr. Dizney commenced his healthcare career at Humana, based in Louisville Kentucky, where he attained the position of Senior Vice President before leaving to form his own company.

United Medical Corporation has developed a chain of behavioral hospitals operated under the Ten Broeck identification and has through their PaviaHealth subsidiary developed a network of hospitals that until divestiture were the largest providers of healthcare services in the Caribbean.

In addition to his role at United Medical Corporation, Mr. Dizney is Chairman of Double Diamond Farm, Inc., a 425-acre thoroughbred nursery and equine training and racing facility located in Ocala, Florida.  Mr. Dizney is a three-term Past President of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association. He is a Director of the Breeders Cup Board, and is a Member and Steward of The Jockey Club. Mr. Dizney, who attended Eastern Kentucky University, is a founding director of the EKU Foundation, and has endowed a scholarship fund he established in 1986 for students from Eastern Kentucky, pursuing degrees in allied health and nursing.  Eastern Kentucky University presented Dizney with an honorary Doctor of Law Degree in 1987.  In 1991, a new allied health classroom building at EKU was named in his honor.

Mr. Dizney is active in numerous community and professional organizations including Life Member of the Board of Directors of the Central Florida Red Cross, Past President and Legacy Director of the University of Florida Gator Boosters, Past President of the University of Central Florida Foundation,  Past President of the Florida Capital One Bowl.  Mr. Dizney has endowed "The Donald R. Dizney Chair in Addiction Medicine" at the University of Florida, and currently serves as a board member of the Addiction and Psychiatry Advisory Board of the Evelyn and William McKnight Brain Institute. Mr. Dizney also serves on the Board of Managers for The Nemours Foundation. As a member of the Executive Committee of Haggai Institute Board of Directors, Mr. Dizney is involved in the world wide training of Christian Leaders.

 

Carlton K. Erickson, Ph.D.

Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology and Director of the Addiction Science Research and Education Center in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin

Dr. Erickson is a research scientist, studying the effects of drugs on the brain for over 40 years.  He received his Ph.D. degree in pharmacology from Purdue University in 1965 and has held tenured teaching and research positions at The University of Kansas and The University of Texas since 1965.  He is presently a member of the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA), the College for Prevention of Drug Dependence (CPDD), and the American College of Neuro-psychopharmacology (ACNP).  Dr. Erickson is an Associate Editor of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, and is the author of a highly acclaimed new book titled Science of Addiction: From Neurobiology to Treatment.  He is a recipient of the Betty Ford Center Visionary Award (2000) and the Nelson J. Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award (2007). A popular speaker and lecturer both nationally and internationally, Dr. Carl Erickson has spoken to approximately 80,000 professionals and people in recovery since 1978.

 

Cheryl Healton, Dr. P.H.

President and Chief Executive Officer, American Legacy Foundation

Following the creation of the American Legacy Foundation in 1999, Dr. Cheryl Healton joined the staff as its first President and Chief Executive Officer and has worked tirelessly to further the Foundation's ambitious mission: to build a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.  During her tenure with the foundation, she has guided the highly acclaimed, national youth tobacco prevention counter-marketing campaign, Truth®, that has been credited in part with reducing youth smoking prevalence to its current 28-year low.       

Although her current focus is aimed at reducing the deadly toll of tobacco on Americans, Dr. Healton‘s long and dynamic career in the field of public health has earned her national recognition and praise.  The recipient of numerous prestigious awards, she has recently been honored with the American Lung Association's Life and Breath Award in 2003; with the 2003 Social Justice Award from the State of Hawaii; and has been named "Star" honoree for the 2004 New York Women's Agenda (NYWA) Star Breakfast - a gala where the NYWA honors outstanding women who represent the spirit of New York, who provide leadership in business and in the community, and who are role models for other women.

Dr. Healton holds a doctorate from Columbia University's School of Public Health and a master's degree in Public Administration at New York University for health policy and planning. 

A thought-provoking public speaker, Dr. Healton has given innumerable presentations around the world.  Considered bold, inspirational and humorous, she is a frequent commentator on national and local broadcast and print news coverage regarding tobacco control issues, which include guest appearances on ABC's Good Morning America; CNN's Larry King Live; NBC's Today, MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews, National Public Radio and more.

 

Herbert Kleber, M.D.

Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, November 1991 - present

In addition to his academic appointment, Dr. Kleber is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division on Substance Abuse at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Until 2001, he was Executive Vice-President and Medical Director of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), a policy center he and Joseph Califano founded in 1992.

Dr. Kleber has been a pioneer in research and treatment of substance abuse for over 35 years. He heads a number of projects where research is carried out on new medications to treat individuals with cocaine, heroin, prescription opioids, or marijuana problems.

Dr. Kleber previously served for more than two years as the Deputy Director for Demand Reduction at the Office of National Drug Control Policy in the White House. He serves on the National Advisory Council to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Dr. Kleber is the author or co-author of more than 200 papers, chapters, and books dealing with all aspects of substance abuse, the co-Editor of the American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Substance Abuse Treatment, and the Chair of the APA Substance Abuse Practice Guidelines Committee.  He has received numerous awards, two honorary degrees, is listed as one of the "Best Doctors in America" and "Best Doctors in New York," is on the editorial board of five scientific journals, and was elected in 1996 to be a member of The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science.  He serves on the Boards of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD), the Partnership for a Drug Free America and Phoenix House, and is a member of the National Advisory Council to the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the APA Council on Addiction.  He has served for many years as the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board to DARE America.
Dr. Kleber is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the American College of Neuro-psychopharmacology, the American College of Psychiatrists, the New York Academy of Medicine, CPDD, and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.  He has served on three Institute of Medicine Committees, numerous governmental panels, and chairs or serves on 10 national boards in the areas of prevention, epidemiology, treatment, and policy.

 

Geoffrey S. Mason

Geoffrey Mason is one of sports television's most accomplished and honored production executives.  A 24-time Emmy Award winner, he has more than 40 years of domestic and international broadcast experience.

Mr. Mason's present role is as Senior Production Specialist for ESPN, where he is assigned to a wide variety of ESPN productions.  He will also be the Head of Production Planning for the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer in South Africa.

Mr. Mason joined ESPN in 1995, overseeing (as Executive Producer) the production and direction of all of the network's international programming.

Before working for ESPN, Mr. Mason was Executive Producer at ABC Sports, where his credits include seven Olympic Games (Summer and Winter.)

He was also instrumental, from 2003 until 2007, in supporting the launch of the NFL Network in Culver City, California.

Mr. Mason graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1963. 

Geoff Mason has served on the Board of Directors of the Betty Ford Center since 1985, and the V Foundation for Cancer Research.  Mr. Mason produced the "Legacy of Hope" tribute film to Betty Ford for the Betty Ford Center 25th Anniversary. 

 

Carol McDaid

Carol McDaid provides her clients with strategic legislative and public affairs consulting on issues that span the breadth of the health care delivery system.  CDI is one of the only public affairs firms in the nation's capital with a special focus on influencing alcohol and other drug policy at the national level.  For over a decade,
Ms. McDaid has worked with leading, non-profit drug and alcohol treatment centers as well as other AOD prevention and consumer organizations to refine public health policy, addressing alcohol and other drug addiction.

 

Mary Pattiz, MFT

From the mid 70's to the early 90's, Mary Turner (Pattiz) was the most listened to female air personality on contemporary music radio.  After leaving radio in 1994, she became an alcohol and drug abuse counselor, working in the field of substance abuse.  Today, she continues to be extremely active in the field as a counselor and consultant for the musicians Union and serves on the Boards of the Musicians Assistance Program, Cedars Sinai Hospital's COACH for Kids, the Young Musicians Foundation, and DARE America. She is a current member of the Betty Ford Center Board of Directors and the Betty Ford Chairman's Council.

 

Gail Shultz, M.D.

Gail Shultz, M.D. is a past Medical Director of the Betty Ford Center.  Prior to coming to the Betty Ford Center, he was Medical Director at Cottonwood de Tucson.  He is active in Impaired Physician Recovery matters with the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) and with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).  Dr. Shultz has lectured widely about the medical aspects of addiction.  He is a member of the Betty Ford Center Chairman's Council.

 

William L. White, M.A.

William L. White is a senior research consultant at Chestnut Health Systems/Lighthouse Institute and past Board Chair of Recovery Communities United. He has a Master's degree in Addiction Studies and 35 years of experience in the addictions field. A founder and Board member of Faces and Voices of Recovery, Mr. White has authored or coauthored more than 275 articles and monographs and thirteen books which have had a profound influence on the field of addiction treatment and recovery.   Slaying the Dragon is the definitive history of alcoholism treatment in North America, and his recently published  Alcohol Problems in Native America: the Untold Story of  Resistance and Recovery – The Truth About the Lie, co-written with Don Coyhis of White Bison shines important new light on the genocidal colonization of Native America. Amongst many other honors and awards, Mr. White  received the 2003 National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers' Michael Q. Ford Journalism Award.

 

Mary Pat Woodard

Mary Pat Woodard has served as a member on the Betty Ford Center Chairman's Council since 2003.  In the spring of 2002, Ms. Woodard was instrumental in bringing the BFC Children's Program to the Denver area.  Since then, she has been actively guiding the Denver Children's Program Advisory Committee and has chaired or co-chaired several fundraising events in support of the Children's Program in Colorado.  She volunteers many hours speaking to the public about the Children's Program and the Center. 

 

Chris Wrather, PhD, MBA

Dr.  Wrather has been associated with the Betty Ford Center for 12 years as a member of the Chairman's Council, the Finance Committee, and more recently, the Board of Directors.  For five years he was the CEO of Wrather Corporation which held interests in hotels, attractions, oil and gas exploration, and entertainment.  Today he spends a large part of his time breeding pedigree dogs, breeding and racing thoroughbred horses, and working with a wide variety of charitable organizations.  Dr. Wrather is a pilot and an FAA  licensed airplane and power plant (A&P) mechanic.

Susan Ford Bales

Susan Ford Bales was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Betty Ford Center in January of 2005.  She had served for the previous fourteen years as a member of the Board and recently as Chairman of the  Finance Committee.  Susan speaks throughout the world about the impact of alcoholism/drug addiction on families and loved ones.  She has also been a national spokesperson on Breast Cancer.  Susan is married to Vaden Bales and they enjoy two daughters, three sons, and a granddaughter.

 

John T. Schwarzlose, M.S., M.B.A.

John Schwarzlose is the founding Director of the Betty Ford Center.  He was selected by Betty Ford and her co-founder, Leonard Firestone, following a national search to be the Administrator/Program Director in 1982 prior to the Center's opening.  John has been a counselor and administrator in the Alcoholism/Drug Addiction field since 1972.  He has served on many national Boards including the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers, and the Advisory Board of the National Institute on Drug Addiction.  He is a Charter Fellow of the American College of Addiction Treatment Administrators.  John hs testified numerous times in Congress and has appeared on many national television shows as a spokesperson for the efficacy of treatment.  John and his wife, Lisa, are the proud parents of two daughters and one son.

Amelia M. Arria, Ph.D. is currently the Deputy Director of Research at the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) at the University of Maryland College Park. Her research interests span several areas of the alcohol and drug field, including understanding the patterns of use, health consequences, and effective methods for treatment and prevention. She is involved in a number of studies examining the predictors of long-term effectiveness of drug treatment in Maryland and studies of risk factors of drug use among youth and young adults. She has been involved in projects aimed at building capacity for epidemiologic monitoring of drug use and related problems in the U.S. Virgin Islands and the U.S.-associated Pacific Islands, and other projects investigating early determinants of weapon-carrying behavior among youth.

A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Treatment Research Institute, a not-for-profit research and development institute in Philadelphia.  Dr. McLellan is globally recognized for his more than 30 years of research into treatment outcomes for substance abuse patients.  His work has promoted better understanding of the factors that lead to treatment success and has fostered greater understanding of addiction as a chronic illness.  Dr. McLellan has served as an advisor to many government and non profit scientific organizations, including the Office of National Drug Control Policy, Research and Evaluation; the National Practice Laboratory of the American Psychiatric Association; the Swiss National Science Foundation; the World Health Organization; and the Greek government,   Dr. McLellan is a Consultant to the Betty Ford Institute.

 

Merlin Olson

Merlin Olson retired as a Partner at Deloitte Consulting in 2000, where he led the strategic planning element nationally for the Deloitte Health Care Group.  He directed complex projects involving strategy, integration and governance and led multi-specialty teams in projects for academic medical centers, health care systems and community hospitals.  He has held faculty appointments at the University of Minnesota and the University of Colorado. He has served the Betty Ford Center as a Consultant for governance and strategic planning since 1986.  Since early 2007, he has carried out similar roles for the Betty Ford Institute.

 

Garrett O'Connor, M.D.

Dr. Garrett O'Connor is an internationally recognized expert in the clinical assessment of fitness-for-duty in safety sensitive personnel, most prominently airline pilots and physicians.  He has had extensive clinical experience in corporate risk and liability arising from workplace addiction.   From September 2003 until December 2007, Dr. O'Connor served as Medical Director of the Betty Ford Center's Licensed Professionals Treatment Program and Chief Psychiatrist of the Betty Ford Center.  He founded the Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation Program and was its Medical Director until his current appointment as CEO of the Betty Ford Institute on January 1, 2008.   He has held tenured faculty positions in the Departments of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and UCLA, and was Medical Director of Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers at both institutions. He has been in personal recovery from alcoholism for 31 years, has written articles and lectured on addiction topics in many countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan, the U.K., Spain, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Sweden, Iceland, and Nicaragua.  He conducted a private fitness-for-duty consultation practice and an outpatient addiction treatment center called REPAIR (Rehabilitation Program for Alcoholics Interested in Recovery) in Los Angeles from 1980 through 2002 when he became a Consultant to the Betty Ford Center.
