According to a recent article, accredited residency programs in addiction are only available for psychiatrists specializing in addiction psychiatry (ADP ).  Of the 40 accredited ADP residency programs in the United States, only 7 offer training to non-psychiatrist physicians . Few reports on substance misuse and recovery among medical professionals exist, and the results of these published reports shed little light on recovery rates and other issues over a long period of time. However, a recent study on one program in England surveyed the recovery results of 100 alcoholic doctors (general practitioners and hospital doctors) over a 21-year period (1980-2001).
